Rarely do I give out five star ratings. Five stars means it can't be improved upon. Five stars means it's so important everyone should read it. Five stars means it's on par with the Bible, or whatever religious text you subscribe to. To be clear, I'm sure this book can be improved on. Not sure how, but I don't want to limit Verne. I'm not sure EVERYONE should read this. I'm not sure what good it would do my 80 year old mother who isn't looking to scale anything but her kale garden. And it's not really on par with the Bible, of course. But I can't give it a four star rating because too many people would look at that, people who SHOULD read it, and would think "Meh, I guess it's not super important that I read this book."Let me be clear--if you are an entrepreneur or business executive then this may be the most important book you ever read. Good to Great? That's a great book. So is the 4 Hour Work Week. The Lean Startup, 7 Habits, Innovator's Dilemma, Blue Ocean Strategy, everything by Peter Drucker, Hard Thing About Hard Things, Start With Why, Art of War, Think and Grow Rich, Delivering Happiness, Who Moved My Cheese, Thank You Economy, Power of Habit, Checklist Manifesto, Ultimate Question, Getting More, Execution, Who, How Will You Measure Your Life, Go Giver, Profit First, etc.--these are all great books, I highly recommend them all, but Scaling Up has something these books don't have--instant high value usability from cover to cover. As an entrepreneur since 1999, this book, more than any other, is the book I wish I had read 10 times and internalized thoroughly before I started my business. It would have made a bigger difference than any other single book I could have read.So what am I going to do now? I've already given a copy to each member of my inner circle at my company. I'll be giving a copy to each member of our management team next. I'm giving it to a potential business partner. I've read it once on Audible, and I bought a Kindle version so I can go through it line by line and make notes and action plans based on what's in it. This isn't a book that will just inspire you, this is the book that gives you the specific tools you need to be successful in your business and grow it. I couldn't be more excited about executing on it.This book is especially important for you to read if you're an entrepreneur because it's entrepreneurs who will save the world. Pick any problem you like; war, global warming, racism, poverty, drunk driving, health care, government, banking--and somewhere, sometime, an entrepreneur will come up with the solution. But if he or she doesn't know how to run a business, we may never know how that entrepreneur could have changed the world. This is the book that can make the difference between an entrepreneur giving it a good go, and then giving up, or that entrepreneur making more than just a dent in the universe.
I had never heard about Scaling up until I attended a conference where Verne Harnish was a keynote speaker. His talk inspired me to buy the audiobook version of Scaling UP. I soon realized that I would like to physically refer to some of the information and worksheets, so I bought the hardcover version. The idea of focusing on People, Strategy, Execution, and Cash is especially meaningful to me as an entrepreneur who founded a business that has been growing for 18+ years and now has over 100 employees. If over the years I had known even half of the information presented in this book over the years, I'm certain that my company would be much further ahead than it is today. Well, better late than never. I'm going to begin using Scaling Up as a tool to improve my company. I've even been inspired to attend the user Scaling Up user conference. Scaling Up was the most meaningful book that I read in 2017.
There is so much good information in here that you really need to pick the section that is most critical for you and focus on it. I've already learned many new things, and I am a retired executive from a Fortune 100 company. Proof that you can learn new things no matter what your experience! My small business is growing so rapidly that I wish I had more time to read this - because it will greatly reduce growing pains and enable key turning points in the structure of my business. For us, cash flow management and the cash conversion cycle (CCC) are most critical - I walked away from a major event because the investments I made 5 months ago will not yield cash for at least 3 months more. Now it seems so obvious! Instead, I am listing on multiple platforms and will sell it all - with 8x the profit - before the other event would have even result in me getting paid. This book may be a little dry for someone without experience in the types of problems explored, but I can tell you from experience that investing the effort at the very young stages of your business (<$50,000 in sales) will make the process of reaching $250,000 in sales less overwhelming. Don't be like me and try to drink from the fire hose of growth at the same time you are trying to learn how to make it more efficient, more effective, and much less painful :)To your success!Nathan
I have read a lot of business books, literally thousands, and I would put this book in my top 10 for sure. There are many, many absolutely superb books on business strategy, leadership, high performance teams, company culture and such but this is a rare book that not only addresses these core elements of running a successful business but also has the specific "how to" workshops necessary to put these critical ideas into action. This is perhaps the single best book I've ever seen that clearly lays out precisely what the management team must do to lead their entire company through multiple growth phases. Verne Harnish is considered one of the most widely respected business growth experts in the world and this book proves why he has that reputation. I have now read, and re-read "Scaling Up" three times cover-to-cover and have recommended it to dozens of my clients. In my opinion this is a "must read" book if you want to understand how to grow your business with discipline and build a sustainably successful organization. I give this book my highest possible personal recommendation.John Spence - one of the Top 100 business thought leaders in America, one of the Top 100 small business influencers in America and one of the top 500 leadership development experts in the world.
