Another great Cooper book. Buy and own your rifle before you read it, and get a good rifle. Not some piece of crap. I just finished restoring my Number 1, Mk III*, and developing a 220 grain lead bullet using 2400 powder and giving me 1860 fps from necksized, fireformed cases. This rifle allows me to work on all the little facets Cooper talks about it his book, with a fast bolt action and the ability to load it either from the top via stripper-clips or from below by simply switching out the magazines. The book is so much more enjoyable if you HAVE a rifle, a good rifle, that you can practice with as you read through the book to develop many of the little skills that Cooper covers. Little .223 carbines, or 7.62 by 39 AK's are probably not the type of firearm to covet because this book will do little for you. This book is about rifles. M-14's. Garands. Lee Enfields. Mausers. Something with power, punch, and the ability to go way out there. But if that's your interest, this book won't let you down.

Cooper is a renowned firearms instructor. Be patient, wade through the book in entity, make notes as you go and revisit regularly. If you master these techniques and practice often, all could become an excellent marksman and be less fearful of exposure to firearms. Our nation owes its very existence to a citizenry armed with rifles, allowing colonial America to throw off the tyrannical yolk of 18th Century Great Britain to become the United States of America. Much is owed to the citizen soldiers, past and present and the firearms that fed their families and supported their government as well as the safe handling of those weapons. As Jeff Cooper points out, firearms have no morality, that responsibility inevitably falls upon the person whose hands hold that device.

I expected more with Jeff Cooper's legendary status. There's plenty of good advice in here, but the writing makes it not quite totally dumbed down enough for a novice. I'm and experienced shooter and I learned a few good tips out of it, but I feel like it could have been edited better and with more details for those new to shooting. Cooper is also a little wordy, which doesnt bother me, but I could see that getting in the way for some people trying to grasp his advice. Another let down was the interior photos are black and white. I feel like this is misleading when the cover is all color photos. For $20 I think they could have done color in a ~100 page book. Cooper is also very opinionated in what he likes in a rifle, but doesn't go into detail on examples of which rifle models or LER scopes hold his favorite attributes.

I'm an Army Officer, with multiple combat tours and over 15 years of service. The military does not teach the simple marksmanship fundamentals laid out by Jeff Cooper in The Art of the Rifle. Jeff's stories are entertaining, and still applicable. If you're interested in improving your marksmanship I recommend you read the book and then attend an Appleseed Project clinic. They go well together, regardless the order you engage them. I thought I knew how to shoot, then I attended an Appleseed and discovered there was a good deal left to be learned about proper marksmanship. Now as an Appleseed instructor, I picked up the book to continue my personal study and was pleasantly surprised to find that the the curriculum espoused in the book is very close to what the Appleseed Project employs. [..]

Not having owned, handled or fired a rifle in over 30 years, I found the book to be short and to the point as a quick refresher course. I recently purchased a small Henry .22 caliber, model H001. To me, the book covered the required basics for the rifle. Instead of a hard lesson as taught in an NRA approved class, the author provided many personal stories that illustrate the point the author was trying to make. On the topic of WIND, the author explained it in great detail. Even some high schools physics classes do not provide the information that the author provided. Many other books on rifles do not cover the subject at all. I have read some reviews of the book by so called "experts", and they do not go into as much detail as the author. The book is a very easy read and I would recommend it to anyone who wanted a basic, starting knowledge of the rifle.

I really enjoy Jeff Cooper's writing. He is a man who knows weapons and is well-qualified to talk about them, but he has this interesting philosophical side to him as well. He comes across as a deep thinker and one who is well-educated and able to get you to see his point of view. This book is one of my favourites of his and gives me a deeper appreciation for rifles and how to shoot one well from various positions. My only quibble is that the cover of this paperback book always curls no matter the temperature or humidity. It's not something I can just leave flat on a table without something to hold it down!

Jeff Cooper is an American legend. He's put down many of what I'd call "grandpa lessons" in this book. I've been shooting for a while but this book helped me take a mature look at my habits and capabilities only to prove that I really didn't know much. This isn't a very "advanced" book I suggest that anyone serious about shooting get this for your bookshelf. There's information about how rifles work, shooting positions, ammunition and even life-and-death stories of having a rife in the field.

Every rifleman could learn from Col Jeff Cooper, one of the most authoritative writers and teachers, whose only peer is likely Elmer Keith. I have been shooting rifles since age 12 and am 68, but I still managed to learn a few things and improved my shooting skills by reading this book. Check out all of Col Cooper's books, a true American Master at Arms. He has written extensively on pistol craft, riflery self defense and hunting. Cooper is the founder and late owner of Gunsight Academy in Paulden AZ, one of the finest schools for the teaching of firearms skills in the world.
