This is a thick compilation that covers quite a few more singles than most bound graphic novels, nice.As far as the story is concerned, I would read it and make an informed decision before I'd let my kids have at it, that's entirely up to you of course, just a word of warning that the subject matter is indeed graphically violent and that the language is acurately that which hyper violent people would use. But I'm pretty sure you knew that already. Frank Castle is a longstanding iconic figure in Graphic literature now. Welcome to his origin. The Punisher is at it's core a treatise on violence and vengeance, asking you to seriously give a ponder to every possible question or dilemma that the subject can present. So be ready, it takes a not so padded sledge hammer approach in getting you to think. The lines between good and evil are blurred with expertise and Ennis doesn't ever waste a syllable in any of his work. But all of that would only be esoteric without a good story and this is most definitely that. Though tales of vengeance have been with us since the conception of tales, Ennis's take on it with The Punisher is an entirely original one. If it doesn't suck you into the story, you just don't like these kinds of stories. It's by no means not just shock and splatter, though yeah... there's lots of that. Ennis wants your attention, and he will get it.Historically, The Punisher is rather significant because a) your protagonist has no "superpowers" or "super armor", b) he easily can die, but just doesn't care, and c) he kills, mecelessly. Before The Punisher appeared, a protagonist just didn't do that in a comic book. And in my thinking the popularity of this series it what sparked the deluge of adult oreinetated graphic series that came flooding into the comic book stores in the "90's and remain popular at present. These days anything Garth Ennis does sells more in pre-orders than most script writer's work does in an entire series. So welcome to the beginning, or welcome back in my case because the original series came out before the internet days, before all the comic book/memorabilia shops showed up in fact, so I missed more than a few of the singles. Good to be back now, amped, and read for the full ride.
Garth Ennis' run on the Punisher is rightfully regarded as one of the best comic runs of the 2000s. This volume covers a prequel "Born" and his first two arcs, "In The Beginning" and "Kitchen Irish".Born is set during the Vietnam War and is by far the best of the 3. Young Captain Castle tries to defend his firebase from the Vietnamese while surrounded by demoralized and incompetent men. How far will he go and what price will he pay? It's an incredible period piece (with some fantastic research) and, unlike later stories, shows Frank's character changing. The Apocalypse Now feeling is very strong. The other two pit the Punisher against the mob and the IRA, familiar enough targets but Ennis works overtime to create distinctive and memorable foes even with these familiar groups. This is a violent, R rated book and not for kids. Many times it feels just ugly and grim but nonetheless it's a great comic and worth picking up.With over 400 pages of great comics for just $12 on the Kindle it's hard to find a batter buy.
What happens when you can be offered to be our true selves, what we only allow us to be in the hells mankind builds in war or madness? Frank Castle is one of the inhabitants of a war in Vietnam and with him there are others that see it with different eyes. This is the first story, Born, and you have to read it at least once.In the volume there are after the origin two other stories. I enjoyed so much the hunt of Punisher with one old ally behind the scene we all knew but not like this; and the third and last is with Irish characters, that one was really good but not as fantastic as the second and not as classic as the first one. But is there to read so it is a win.The feeling I got when read Barry Windsor Smith's Weapon X years ago I felt it again when I read, without hoping anything, this shocking story called Born, by Garth Ennis. Formidable.
This first volume of Garth Ennis' "Punisher Max" run contains the first two story arcs "In The Beginning" and "Kitchen Irish", and is only made even a better package with the addition of "Born", which is in my opinion, one of the greatest origin stories ever told in comics. However, this is not a book for children, there are various mature themes explored in these stories and the art complements the subject matter with very detailed and graphic visuals. These stories are grim and brutal, but I never felt like they dragged and never felt like a chore to read, and there's even some of Ennis' dark humor sprinkled over every now and then to give some levity to the whole experience. You will not be able to put this book down.
Despite having read quite a bit of Punisher stuff, I hadn't dipped into this particular Ennis run until this collection came out, and now I regret not checking it out sooner. It's much darker than previous Ennis stories like Welcome Back, Frank. Born and Kitchen Irish are both fairly good, but In The Beginning is an iconic powerhouse of a story that's a great intro for new fans and a real experience for those more familiar with the Punisher mythos, or even those who've just read something like WBF. Great stories, quality book.
Taking away from the Comic Code that followed the character in the 1980s and 1990s, this volume shows Frank Castle in his purest form: as an unrelenting killing machine (particularly in “Bornâ€, which perhaps demonstrates the inner war for Frank than any other story has). With themes such as terrorism playing a large role in the plots, Castle navigates a world of post-9/11 alienation and takes the fight to anyone who gets in his way.
