The Scholarship & Financial Aid Solution: How to Go to College for Next to Nothing with Shortcuts, Tricks, and Tips from Start to Finish REVISED 2ND EDITION

Review

Now in a revised second edition, The Scholarship &: Financial Aid Solution lives up to its title as a practical guide to identifying and properly applying for different types of scholarships. Chapters cover how to search for scholarship applications, guidelines for filling out applications or writing essays, preparing for interviews, avoiding scholarship scams, and more. Some (scammers) will offer a free workshop. The workshop is free, but the meeting they setup afterward will not be. Parents and students ask for my advice about whether or not they should go. I tell them what I have just told you, and to attend if they want to but never pay money for anything... These scam companies always seem to rent a room at reputable places, which makes them seem trustworthy. An excellent reference and resource for anyone confronting rising college and tuition costs, highly recommended. --The Money/Finance Shelf - Midwest Book Review

About the Author

I have given countless lectures and workshops, three to four weekly private meetings with parents and students, and have been interviewed on several local radio stations concerning scholarships. I have also received several awards for my work with scholarships as well. I received the County School Employee of the Year in 2000 and 2004, the first person to ever receive this honor twice and Vanguard High School s Employee of the Year twice. I have been honored by being the District Teacher of the Year for the VFW in 2000, 2004, the post winner for 2007, and currently selected as the District winner for 2008, and was a Semi-Finalist for the Junior League s Three Who Care Award in 2007. I am also in Who s Who Among America s Teachers (multiple times), Cambridge Who s Who Among Professional and Executive Women-2007/2008 (Honors Edition) Emerald s Who s Who for Executives and Professionals-2007, Biltmore Who s Who of Professional and Executive Women-2007, Princeton Premier Business Leaders and Professionals-2007, and Madison Who s Who Among Executives and Professionals-2007/2008. I have always loved writing and telling stories to my children so I thought that my first attempt at a novel would be fairly tales. Instead, one day I sat down and started to write about scholarships, a subject that I love working with and have researched and implemented with accomplishment, a total hands on approach to winning scholarships. After being asked by a multitude of other schools counselors and personnel on how my students have been so accomplished at obtaining scholarships, I decided to share this secret of achievement by writing it down and putting it into a book. I believe that with my hands on approach, that this book will be able to assist a multitude of students and parents in finding, applying, and winning scholarships to make college more than just a dream."

After reading, I really question the other reviews. It's not bad, but definitely not what I expected. I expected information on specific scholarships and more information on how to find them. I was also expecting the 'Shortcuts, Tricks, and Tips on "How to go to College for next to Nothing. None of those things are emphasized in this book. And...there are several errors and typos.

Upon reading this book, I must completely disagree with the angry review written by `dogboy'. This book has wonderful tips on how to find scholarships and is a great assistance with the agonizing process of applying for them. I even found the article written on Debra Lipphardt in the Hispanic Outlook magazine (January 2009) and totally agree with the article written by Gary. M. Stern; "Professors who live in ivory towers removed from the reality of most urban, minority and working-class students write many financial aid books. But Debra Lipphardt is connected to public high school students." For me this book is connected to students (and parents) that do not know where to start or how to go about winning scholarships. I found it extremely helpful.

You don't want a long review, and this isn't one. I have twin 17yr olds and I need all the help I can get. The book is packed with info, concise and to the point, and anything but boring. If you want what the title promises, buy the damned book.

Though sometimes an overwhelming read, this volume contains so much helpful scholarship information, I believe every college bound student should have a copy of it.

I bought this recently since my son is a 10th grader in HS. I have already put together a folder that I keep all his important things in that we can use for when he applies for scholarships. Things such as honor roll report cards, captain of his soccer teams certificates and essays that he can use later, etc. It's the only book I bought and I do not feel like I will need to purchase another one - this one is very complete.

Valuable information

This book is 142 pages, but with large font, 1.5 spaced - it's really just a glorified pamphlet in promotion of Debra Lipphardt. The information is too general to be useful. Advice consists of statements such as: "Be honest; this is an easy question" and "Make it positive!" The book reads like a long informercial about Debra Lipphardt. In preparing to go through the college application process with my daughter, we ordered over a dozen books. This book was far and away the least helpful, least informative, and least specific. I discourage parents from buying this book. Ms. Lipphardt may be a fine college counselor in person, but this book is not a good purchase for anyone looking for specific, meaningful guidance about application for financial aid and seeking scholarship funds.

I found this book to be a complete waste of time and money. The author seems to have never graduated high school, based on her lack of writing skills. I was shocked by her poor grammar and elementary-school writing style. If your child is reading at a fifth-grade level and knows ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about applying for college, then this book may add some value. Otherwise, skip it and go for something written with intelligence for the intelligent. Try Tim Higgins' "Pay for College Without Sacrificing Your Retirement." That book was fabulously helpful to me.
