If you want to encourage a middle schooler to question authority, this is a good start. It will help focus their thinking on how to make a difference. However, the cover says, "With a blend of practical suggestions and de-stressing challenges, this is the essential handbook for anyone who dreams of a better world and make it a reality." The problem is, this is not a handbook, and it has darn few practical suggestions. It's more of a scrapbook with places to fill in the reader's own frustrations, ideas and dreams. Examples include, "Favorite Twitter Comebacks You've Seen," "Design Your Own Political Party, Name, Logo and Slogan." Lots of creative prompts, but not a handbook in any sense.Do this: Click on Look Inside, then click "Surprise Me". The sample pages shown there are quite representative. If you like what you see, especially if you have a middle school student you want to encourage, buy the book.
I think this is an adorable book, and I recommend it for young teens or perhaps people in their 20's. It is a book with ideas about life and revolution. But most of all it is a book with affirmations, and placeholders on nearly every page, if not all, for you to insert your favorite idea, photo, opinion, and such. The content of this "journal" will be anything that you desire. You will be recording your journey through (or to) revolution, protest.I get the idea that the main object in this book is of there needing to be revolt is Donald J. Trump, which in many cases we will agree; but some might not appreciate it being about him.Other issues were brought up in this book, like BLM. I would like to have seen more issues than were presented, because after all, there is so much to champion. But this is a sweet book; not really disrespectful for the exception of a few minor things.Very nice book for those who see the need for change, and if they would like to have a book like this to think it all through, because that is the value I see in something like this. This "smash-the-patriarchy" guided journal was written by Alice Skinner, a very imaginative author with many skills, wearing more than one hat in her life.I think, in many respects her work deserves praise.Enjoy.
I'm a fan of Wreck this Journal (I actually have two copies of it.) so I was predisposed to enjoy this format which is aimed at helping people -- mainly young people, I think, but about that more in a minute -- to make their political ideas more concrete, and to help them find a way to act on those ideas and beliefs. In a format that relies on the reader to create the final book with written, drawn, cut-and-pasted information, it gives prompts, and expects us to think about what those prompts mean to us. They range from a bit silly: "Stick in the dumbest headline from this week." or "Sew Trump's mouth shut" (Where you actually stitch the page with a needle and thread. Talk about cathartic!) to deeply important: "Check your privilege. List the ways you've had advantages in life." But across the board it is intended to make us think about our attitudes, our lives, and how to enact our political beliefs. Possibly it will help to change some of those beliefs, if the work is done with honesty. And why shouldn't it be? You're the only one who has to see what you've written/drawn.The reason why it feels aimed more at young people -- and anything that gets them more politically active is a winner in my book -- is that there's a lot of social media exercises included. I'm not going to try to say that older people aren't into social media, that would be nonsense. But items like listing ways to say no to parents, and teachers, and other authority figures are clearly intended more for teens. But again, anything that motivates political and social awareness is okay in my book. That isn't to say that it's only for young people. I'm having a great time with it, dealing with it the way I do with Wreck this Journal, as a kind of steam vent, a way to work through problems or conundrums. So if you feel you want to become more politically aware and active, but simply don't know how to start or what to focus on, give this little book a shot. It may help you gain a sense of where you want to spend your political energy. And who knows? You may find out things about yourself you didn't know.
As others have observed, this "handbook" is very similar to Wreck This Journal (Black) Expanded Edition, but with a political slant and aimed at tweens and teens. The book is meant for those who feel discouraged by our current administration, but don't really know what to do about it. There are guided journal entries, places to "check your privilege" and even activities for venting frustration, such as sewing Trump's mouth shut. There are multiple activities involving social media as well. It's intended to make the user think instead of simply reacting, which is something we can all benefit from, no matter what our political leaning.I teach college students, and I often hear them say things like, "There's nothing we can do," or "My vote doesn't count, anyway." It really frustrates me to hear them say these things, but I understand that what they're really saying is that they feel powerless to change anything and don't know what to do about that feeling. Books like this, while they seem a little fluffy, can help spark ideas and demonstrate that even little things -- especially little things done every day -- can lead to bigger things that make a difference.
