I believed the author phoned this one in. There was no real interplay between the main characters like in past books in the series. As for the murder mystery, been there, done that. Very predictable. I could have overlooked the mystery element if the writing had been good. But, it wasn't. Again, the whole book felt like it was phoned in. I have already bought the next book in the series but I have very low expectations for it.I suspected Innes had tired of the series because the books keep getting shorter. If an author cannot make a story last for at least two hundred pages, the writing better be very dense to account for the brevity. The writing is not that dense at all.
PSA: Contains a spoiler at the end.I have managed to read the entire series within 24 hours. I just can't seem to put them down once I start. The writing and characters will easily catch your attention. In the 4th installment of the Blake Harte Mysteries, a serial killer from D.S. Harte's past enters the game once again to have his revenge on Harte and the one that got away. It's true that we see very little character development for the returning cast, but it's still an enjoyable read. The only problem I have with Reach is that it was not long enough, but I guess I might say that about all of the books in this series. Also, Gardiner might be a grump, but I would love to see more of him. Perhaps he needs someone like Harrison to take the edge off of him?I was hoping that our MC would be promoted to inspector at the end of this book, but I guess we will have to see how Harte handles the new boss in the next installment. I can't wait!
Reasonably enjoyable read. Innes is a good solid writer, however, I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first two. One reason is because it is short, actually novella length. It didn't have the depth of the others and who the murderer was became, I thought, fairly obvious. There were a couple of things the characterization of the killer that bothered me, but I don't want to detail them because it would be spoilers. Innes did leave a good opening for another novel which I will no doubt read even though I didn't think this one was his best effort. Still it's worth a read.
# 4 and still going strong. This one was a little shorter but no less gripping and chock full of intrigue and suspense...a wonderful whodunit. Looking forward to more by Robert Innes and definitely recommend this series of books.
I love this series follow DS Blake Harte as he attempts to figure out how someone could kill a woman in her bedroom on the top floor of a building with no other access
A,solid mystery that keeps you guessing and reading. The same characters we've grown to love. Can't wait for the next book and to see if Harte ever bonds with Betty.
Great locked door mysteries! Love the characters and story lines. I can't wait for more! I'm becoming a huge Robert Innes fan!
Would like to continue to read them all, as all of the books are just delightful can not wait to start the next book
