Review
“[C]harming… Reid takes us on a world tour of tax systems and the efforts to reform them. He approaches this most disliked specialty of the dismal science of economics with a wry voice and a light touch… a rich and sturdy fabric of facts presented in plain English. As a longtime Washington Post foreign correspondent, Reid knows how to make the distant seem close. His eye for the telling detail is sharp… Those unfamiliar with economics, accounting or tax law will be better able to understand these subjects by reading “A Fine Mess.”… With enough readers, Reid might even help us to initiate real tax reform by replacing a tax code so complex it includes the anti-complexity rule in Section 7803(c)(2)(B).”—David Cay Johnston, The New York Times Book Review“A fun book on taxes. It's terrific.”—Fareed Zakaria, CNN's Global Public Square“An exploration of the absurd complexity of the American tax system and an astute comparison to many examples of simpler, effective tax collection by other governments around the world. Throughout his well-reported, clearly written exposé of United States tax policy, [Reid] reveals the follies of the concept of American exceptionalism and the misguided pride of presidents, members of Congress, and Internal Revenue Service commissioners….Though Reid's topic may be anathema to many readers, he makes it relentlessly revelatory and simple to understand.”—Kirkus Reviews [starred]“Highly readable and informative…offers solid solutions and predicts the time for change has come.”— Publishers Weekly

Probably the finest book on tax policy I have ever read. Following the lead of his earlier book "The Healing of America," Reid takes us around the world showing us how other nations raise the cash needed to run a government. Some nations have some really good ideas we can learn from. The author includes the clearest-ever explanation of how a Value-Added Tax works. Those pages alone are worth the price of the book.It is about time for America to re-write its tax code. This book helps you understand the underlying issues.
Okay, you pay taxes, but do you understand systems of taxation? Probably not. I did not, but now I do. Not the details of tax laws, but the big picture: BBLR (broad based, low(er) rates), flat income rate versus graduated income rates, sales tax versus VAT (value added tax), the differences among tax deductions, exclusions and credits, and much more. Sounds like dull reading? It’s not! Reid includes much humor with his clear explanations and documents that the US is “one nation, under-taxed,†compared to most other countries with developed economies. I recommended this book to two book clubs I belong too. Despite much initial skepticism, the book was a hit in both clubs. If you think income inequality is a world problem, then you must understand taxation, which is by far the best way to address the problem. Every political candidate and every voter should read this book. And perhaps reread it, as I did, with pleasure both times.
Great book on understanding the current tax environment and how the tax code has changed over the years. Reid makes some good arguments and provides rational details and evidence to back up his claims. Although you might think Taxes would be a dry subject, I recommend reading the first few pages and see if you like it. It is presented in an entertaining manner and only took me a few days to read.
The US is ready for a tax overhaul. Mr Reid makes the case for BBLR taxation. No exemptions and everything is taxed at a lower rate. And VAT, seriously what is wrong with the US that we aren't doing this? Comprehensive, well written, and easily absorbed discourse on our current ineffective tax systems and effective tax systems of other countries.
Great summary of tax policy in various countries, particularly during modern history (especially the US). However, if you stay up on tax policy debates, you're likely to find a lot that you already know. That said, the book is well written and chock full of facts.
I have always liked T.R. Reid's commentary on National Public Radio, but this is the first book I've read by him. I found it to be clear, interesting, and informative about the American tax system. He also covers the taxation of many other countries. Mr. Reid has a way of making a dry topic almost fun to read. And it's especially timely since Congress is at this moment discussing major tax reform. I didn't give it a five because there are few books that I "love". I did like this one a lot and do recommend it, but I didn't love it.....
A good book for summarizing all the problems with the American taxing system and at least proposing some solutions. After reading this you will be, not just appear, very knowledgeable about tax policy. You'll be the star of the next dinner party. The conclusions are to go to a US VAT and make all taxes broad based and low rates, or BBLR as in the tax expert jargon. Unfortunately, never gonna happen. Too many sacred cows as he points out in our income tax system. He does spend a little time describing the return free filing systems that most other developed countries use. Since we'll never change the tax code, let's go to simplification. Kudos to the Tax Advocate, Nina Olson, for her work. I use her office to resolve mundane processing matters and it works. I used to be a CPA and now prepare taxes for the IRS VITA program. Nearly all the taxpayers we see should not even have to come in. The IRS already knows everything. I have 100 year old widows come in in wheelchairs to only sign their name. What a waste of time. Brookings has a good site about return free filing. Google it. This book should be required reading in any civics class, as money makes the government run and taxes are how it gets that money.
I was pleasantly surprised at how much I learned from this book. It is an easy read, too. I don't necessarily agree with all of the author's opinions, but I'm close.
